Lunati now offers part numbered and special grind Voodoo Camshafts for the Chrysler Hemi 5.7/6.1L V8 engine so that owners can boost horsepower and torque output, plus extend RPM. To perfectly complement these aftermarket camshafts, you will also need Lunati Signature Series Ovate Beehive Valve Springs and matching retainers. These valve springs are designed for use with the Voodoo Hemi Cams to dramatically increase engine performance capabilities. Lunati Signature Series Ovate Beehive Valve Springs feature a unique, precision-wound spring wire that is ovate-shaped and engineered to reduce stress and coil surging. As with all Lunati springs, these are heat-set to increase longevity and reduce initial run-in tension loss, as well as provide correct valve seat and open-load pressure. They also provide the required total spring travel of up to .600" lift for Voodoo Cams. Each spring is carefully tension tested, then matched in sets of 16 (individual springs are available for purchase).

Lunati also offers CNC machined, lightweight steel alloy spring retainers that are CAD designed to deliver maximum strength and durability. Lunati now offers a series of computer designed camshafts that boost horsepower, torque and RPM output from the 2003 & Later 5.7L/6.1L, non-variable valve timing, Chrysler Hemi V8 engines in both cars and trucks. The mildest of these new Lunati Voodoo Cams provides a noticeable power increase, even with a stock Hemi engine while the two higher performance cams produce serious, ground pounding power when correctly matched with Lunati aftermarket valvetrain components. Lunati Voodoo H-Beam Rods are produced from aircraft quality 4340 forged steel alloy. Each rod is precisely CNC machined to strict specifications and inspected for quality and specification adherence during several manufacturing phases that include stress relieving, shot peening and magnafluxing. Stress relieving removes any remaining stresses from metal while shot peening creates residual stresses on the rod surface which then allows it to withstand cracking and breaking for longer. NEW LUNATI TL2 & TR2 CAMS FOR SMALL- & BIG-BLOCK CHEVROLET RACING ENGINES: MORE HIGH-LIFT AREA SHOWS GAINS

Olive Branch, MS: The latest Lunati asymmetrical camshafts, the new TL2 and the TR2, designed for small- and big-block Chevrolet racing engines, are quite the marvels.

The TL denotes Lunati’s cam series for solid flat tappets, the TR designation represents solid roller tappets, and the numeral 2 stands for second generation. Both series of camshafts are designed using the latest technology and feature increased lobe lift—therefore greater valve lift. They are specifically developed for short track Modified applications, Dirt Late Models, Sprint cars, and drag and street-strip vehicles.

Depending on valve train weight these new TL2 and TR2 camshafts provide stability up to 8,800rpm. Furthermore, included within their 30 new part numbers, Lunati has introduced smaller base circle designs that provide extra clearance in stroker engines. TL2 prices start at $187.06 and TR2 at $337.16 with custom grinds available as further attractive options.

Lunati’s design begins at the first valve moment of the cycle, the exhaust opening point. By deliberately delaying the opening point they generate more torque from the power stroke, consequently adding more power to the crank. This process occurs throughout the rpm band and is effective as long as the exhaust gases can be properly scavenged from the chamber at high rpm.

Then, as expected, they open the intake valve before Top Dead Center. But they open it late to reduce the effects of reversion entering the intake port. They also open it FAST, inducing earlier air flow and providing more high-lift area (also known as more area under the curve). This occurs after TDC as the piston heads downward on its intake stroke, which creates high velocity in the port. If a port has high velocity and the intake valve has lots of high-lift area, the port fills the cylinder faster and has more time to fill it—thus increasing the engine’s potential horsepower and torque.

They then close the intake valve gently to prevent valve bounce and facilitate valve train reliability. Of the four timing points the exhaust closing point has the least power-producing effect on the valve train. Yet in this area Lunati exercises special care to ensure exhaust valve reliability.

New Lunati Stroker Crankshafts For GM LS7 Engines

Olive Branch, MS: In February, 2010 Lunati unveiled six new Pro Series stroker crankshafts for the LS7 with stroke lengths of 4.325in to 4.625in. This year they have concluded the range by adding a further four. American-made the stroke lengths of these new crankshafts are as follows: 4.000in (P/N: JO711ER); 4.125in (P/N: JU711ER); 4.185in (P/N: JL711ER); and 4.250in (P/N: JP711ER).

Earlier, Lunati introduced ten stroker cranks for LS1 engines. Both series of cranks (LS1 and LS7) encompass stroke lengths of 4.000in to 4.625in and feature conventional 2.559in main bearing journals and 2.100in rod bearing journals. OEM rod lengths of 6.125in are recommended on strokes from 4.000in to 4.185in., but on the remaining longer strokes, from 4.250in to 4.625in., Lunati recommends 6.300in connecting rods for a better stroke-to-rod ratio. All of these cranks are now shelf-stock items.

In addition, Lunati offers custom grinds to any dimension within this stroke range. Furthermore, custom grinds can be obtained with either standard crank pins (2.100in) or with larger big-block-style pins (2.200in), which adds durability to engines with power adders.

Using American-made premium 4340 steel forgings these cranks are capable of handling 1,500-plus horsepower. They are endowed with micro-polished and lightened connecting rod journals to reduce rotating mass, micro-polished and gun-drilled main journals to reduce overall mass, special counterweight profiles to direct oil to the bearings and reduce windage, and Lunati’s exclusive finite detailing, profiling, and pulse-plasma nitriding processes. The latter provides consistent journal surface finish without affecting core hardness.

VooDoo Cams For Harleys Now Available

Lunati® has announced three new series of Voodoo® aftermarket hydraulic roller camshafts to suit three Harley Davidson engines: The Evolution big twin, the twin cam from 1999-2006, and the twin cam from 2007 to current. Each series offers three distinct characteristics: low-end torque with strong mid-range power for touring; peak horsepower; and a combination of both. The Evolution series is also available as a kit, containing valve springs, spring seats, steel retainers, and valve stem locks. In addition all of these cams provide a distinctive new Lunati sound.

   Voodoo® cams are ground with asymmetrical lobes which means that the dynamics of the opening and closing ramp profiles are different—usually effecting faster opening and slower closing. One side of the ramp is usually straight to the nose of the lobe while the opposite (closing) ramp profile has a pronounced dip or wave in the middle, thus producing quieter operation and being gentler on the valve train. These cams improve throttle response, acceleration, and maintain excellent engine vacuum on the street.

FordMuscle, the noted digital magazine, published a refreshing article rating six top camshaft makers. Writers Jon Mikelonis and Day Scovel contacted and drilled these producers with a series of technical questions as well as tested the level of customer service they provided. The article, entitled Cam you help me?, scored each company on seven different criteria, and the company that came out on top was Lunati. Lunati Announces New Pro Series 6.300-Inch Connecting Rods for LS Race Engines

Olive Branch, MS: Lunati has announced a new Pro Series 6.300-inch connecting rod. It is designed especially for all aftermarket LS large displacement racing blocks with 9.500 to 9.750-inch deck heights. However, these new American-made rods, which complement Lunati’s recently introduced Pro Series LS long-stroke crankshafts, will fit all LS blocks.

Their chief advantages are two-fold. First, when compared with the 6.125-inch con-rod, their longer length provides essential crankshaft clearance, eliminating the necessity of cutting away valuable counterweight material and the subsequent headaches and extra costs involved in rebalancing. Second, the 6.300-inch long rod restores a more desirable stroke-to-rod ratio. Further, it retains the correct compression height for the piston.

Derived from aerospace 4340 alloy steel, which is oil quenched, tempered, and tested, these premium quality connecting rods were created to handle more power and more rpm. They are perfect for all-out race engines, for Street-strip engines, even Street Rods—in fact any LS engine where a stroke length of 4.125 inch or longer is desired.

CORE VALUE: LUNATI’S NEW $225 GOLD VALVE-SPRING KIT FOR GM LS ENGINES

Olive Branch, MS: Times are lean right now, and especially so for hot rodders on a budget. To address this frustrating inconvenience, Lunati bucks the market with a new LS-engine dual valve-spring kit (PN 73925K1LUN) for about $50 less than competitors.

With a maximum lift capability at 0.660-inch, the Lunati kit serves the majority of popular camshaft applications. The kit is complete with dual valve springs, steel retainers, locks, valve seals and spring locators and represents a drop-in installation for many popular LS applications.

OEM LS engines use single-wire valve springs designed around factory camshafts. Aftermarket camshafts require new valve springs suited for high lift and serious ramp rates.

Lunati’s retainers and spring locators are CNC-manufactured from 4140 alloy steel. The locators pilot onto the valve guides and locate the inner diameter of the inner valve springs, preventing them from abrading the spring pockets in the aluminum heads.

In common with all dual-spring retainers, these new Lunati types have a group of steps machined into their underside (which locate the upper registers of the valve springs) and a bore machined to accept the 7-degree valve locks. The locks are equipped with inner bead locks and the 7-degree interference angle between the locks and the retainers is favored by many who believe it causes the locks to clamp the valve stems tighter.

Advantages:

Through careful CAD and FEA design efforts, Lunati engineers have developed a new valve spring retainer design using wear-favorable alloy steel, yet nearly matching the weight advantage of Titanium. For street/strip longevity, Lunati’s lightweight alloy steel retainer is unbeatable.

Viton steel-jacketed valve seals complete the kit. The steel jackets ensure the valve stem seals remain tight around the valve guides and also protect the seals should the inner springs come in light contact with them. The Viton material is ideal for resisting heat and oil, particularly some of the more aggressive oil additives that cause ordinary seals to swell and distort.

NOTE: Small-block Chevy applications: While GM LS engines will be the most popular use of this spring kit, the similar kit (PN 73925K2LUN) is also available with the proper retainers and locks for the traditional small-block Chevy engine.

Voodoo Engine Break-In Lube

Over the past few decades motor oils have been reformulated to meet the specific needs of late model engines and the always tightening Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) restrictions on emissions. This is great for late model engines with hydraulic roller lifters, but very bad for anyone with an early model, flat tappet equipped engine.

“The problem area for flat tappet engines is that modern motor oils no longer contain adequate levels of manganese, phosphorous and zinc,” states Steve Slavik, Lunati technician. “These minerals are necessary for proper lifter rotation and without them you greatly increase the chance of a lifter seizing up and sliding along the camshaft. This scenario will cause non-repairable damage to the camshaft and lifter faces.”

To resolve this issue, Lunati^® has formulated a flat tappet Voodoo^® Break-In Lubricant that easily blends with modern, non-synthetic motor oils to restore them to flat tappet compatibility. By simply pouring in Lunati’s part #301 lubricant, the necessary levels of phosphorus, zinc and manganese are added back to the oil, ensuring proper lifter rotation. Voodoo Break-In Lubricant is available in a 12oz. easy-to-pour bottle, and should be used in all engine applications when a new camshaft and lifter set is installed.

Saying you’re going to break a world record in the Drag Radial Outlaw class with one of the smallest cubic inch engine and turbo combos might sound a bit pretentious. Especially in a class dominated by Big Block Chevy and Ford engine platforms. Well known Drag Radial racer Dwayne “Big Daddy” Gutridge of Big Daddy Performance has set a goal for the 2009 race season to do just that by making a 6 second pass on drag radials.

Why Is This Man Smiling?

It’s been said that Joe Lunati built “some of the ugliest cars ever raced,” but competitors who failed to take him seriously did so at their own peril. Ungainly as it may look, Lunati’s Devin-bodied “Trouble Maker” was a strip terror. He won the Street Eliminator title at the 1964 NHRA Nationals at Indy and repeated the feat in 1966. That would be the last year he raced the Devin, as Lunati entered the emerging Funny Car ranks in 1967 with a Corvair.

Lunati worked for an engine rebuilder in his Memphis hometown during the mid-’60s. After hours, he would grind his own racing cams, and his interest in cam design grew further as he developed a close working relationship with Harvey Crane. Theirs was a mutually beneficial relationship: Crane would send Lunati new camshafts to test on the strip, and Lunati’s race wins helped Crane sell cams.

A year after he switched to Funny Cars, Lunati was ready to make a career change as well. In 1968, he opened the cam-grinding business that would soon cement his reputation among racers as a provider of high-quality camshafts and other high-performance components.

Lunati staff made an interesting discovery at the recent PRI Trade Show in Orlando. They found out that many engine builders, former customers, and potential customers were unaware that Lunati had been restored to private ownership.

Thus they didn’t know the company had returned to its roots as the Racer’s Company, that the original factory-direct purchasing program had been resurrected, or that all the previous benefits of the Racer’s Company were now available to them. These include contingency incentives for the racers, newly trained personnel, and acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment and production techniques.

Derek Scott, Lunati’s Director of Operations said, “With the previous ownership, engine builders were unable to deal directly with Lunati, and we just want to get the word out that things are different now. We are actively seeking relationships with qualified engine builders, and we are adding the necessary resources to handle their needs.” To this end, Lunati has appointed a new-account representative, Scott Davis (pictured on the right).

Lunati® High RPM Hydrualic Roller Lifters - SBC, BBC, LS1

If there is one performance limitation to hydraulic roller lifters it is the maximum rpm capability they can maintain in race applications. The internal hydraulics of standard roller lifters are susceptible to pumping up around 6200-6500 RPM, causing horsepower robbing valve float along with the possibility of severe valvetrain damage. At this point there are two options for racers: 1) Switch to a solid roller setup, which requires various upgrades and routine maintenance or 2) Upgrade to a Lunati High RPM lifter and get the RPM capabilities similar to a solid roller with the long, maintenance free life of a hydraulic roller.

These aren’t your “I just want to cruise around town going the speed limit” kind of valvetrain parts. We are talking about a hydraulic lifter that can withstand 10 million (you read that right) cycles on a Spintron (valvetrain dyno) and operate in RPM ranges over 7000 RPM. What makes these lifters able to excel in areas where competitor’s hydraulic lifters would have failed? Because we only use the best of the best and cut no corners to ensure our customers get what they pay for. Recent advancements in the aftermarket valvetrain industry, such as highly developed valve springs, have allowed for the development and use of more aggressive camshaft profiles for performance vehicles. Over the span of a year Lunati worked side by side with PAC engineers to build a valve spring that is custom tailored to the LS engine family and its specific valvetrain characteristics. The outcome is our Lunati® LS-series Pacaloy valve springs which are a perfect example of sophisticated engineering that has worked its way from concept, to testing and then into the hands of racers.

The two areas that make our Lunati Pacaloy Beehive Springs so advanced is the proprietary Pacaloy material and beehive spring shape. Pacaloy technology was chosen by Lunati based on its high strength characteristics, superior alloy properties and proven real world durability versus other available materials. A typically Pacaloy valve spring can handle a load 5 times as long as spring constructed from an O.E. style material. This gives you exceptional fatigue resistance and long life out of your performance valvetrain set up.

With a superior material chosen, it was then time to determine the most efficient spring layout. After extensive testing, a beehive shaped spring was selected because of its several performance benefits. First, this design reduces the overall mass of your valvetrain (more RPM capability) by allowing for the use of a smaller and lighter valve spring retainer. Second, the ovate wire shape utilized in this beehive design distributes stress more evenly through the wire cross sections, making the valve spring more stable under demanding conditions. But now Lunati will add to that with its renewed emphasis on supporting racers and helping them find Victory Lane no matter what they are racing. Lunati has been purchased by an exclusive ownership group made up of industry and racing veterans dedicated to providing racers with cutting-edge technology at affordable prices. They understand that the foundation has already been laid with Lunati’s history of excellence in motorsports and intend to use that as a base for even greater success on the race track.

The first step will be to immediately implement a program to greatly expand Lunati’s technical, manufacturing and engineering resources. The Lunati® signature Voodoo® technology is now available in solid flat tappet camshafts. Race proven Voodoo® profiles incorporate over 39 years of valvetrain research and development, producing the best all around camshaft to date. These aggressive solid flat tappet designs feature an asymmetrical lobe shape with slower closing sides that set the valve down easily to reduce noise and premature wear of the valvetrain.
